Armenia's Minister of Economy, Gevorg Papoyan, participated in the 17th Conference of Agriculture Ministers held as part of the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) in Berlin. At the event, he outlined Armenia’s vision for sustainable development in bioeconomy and the green economy.
The conference, which brought together agriculture ministers from nearly 50 countries and senior representatives from ten international organizations, focused on issues such as food security, climate change, digital technologies, and the development of green economies.
In his address, Gevorg Papoyan highlighted the critical role agriculture plays in Armenia’s economy and culture, noting that the sector currently accounts for around 9% of the country’s GDP. He emphasized shared challenges faced by Armenia and many other nations, including climate change, inefficient use of natural resources, biodiversity preservation, and global food security concerns.
"We see bioeconomy as a vital path toward sustainable development. Our efforts are focused on integrating traditional agricultural practices with modern technologies to create value-added products and promote sustainable livelihoods," stated Papoyan. He also expressed confidence that by 2025, the Armenian government would approve the framework for a green economy and green taxonomy, paving the way for new collaboration opportunities.
The minister paid special attention to the upcoming COP17 Conference on Biodiversity, which Armenia will host in 2026. He invited colleagues to participate in this significant international event to continue dialogue and strengthen partnerships.
The conference concluded with the adoption of a joint communiqué aimed at enhancing the role of agricultural trade and food systems in supporting sustainable agriculture and food security.
