Armenia's potential path towards European Union (EU) membership was highlighted by Alen Simonyan, the Chairman of the Armenian Parliament, during a press briefing on February 29. While advocating for Armenia's consideration of applying for EU membership, Simonyan cautioned against hasty actions, stressing the potential risks associated with abrupt policy changes.
Addressing concerns regarding the compatibility of Armenia's EU aspirations with its existing geopolitical ties to Russia, Simonyan emphasized the importance of thoughtful deliberation. He acknowledged that while Armenia should consider EU membership, it is important not to rush the process to avoid public policy risks.
Simonyan's remarks mark a significant development in Armenia's political discourse, as high-ranking officials openly discuss the prospect of EU accession for the first time. Previously, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had expressed Armenia's willingness to engage with the EU, contingent upon the Union's capacity to facilitate such a partnership.
Highlighting Armenia's democratic credentials, Simonyan asserted that the country's commitment to democratic values surpasses that of some EU member states. He underscored Armenia's robust democratic framework as a key asset in its pursuit of closer ties with the EU.
Furthermore, Simonyan raised concerns over Russia's perceived failure to uphold its obligations to safeguard Armenia's sovereignty, citing instances within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). This lapse in security commitments has prompted Armenia to view integration into democratic systems as imperative for its national security.
However, Simonyan clarified that discussions regarding NATO membership are not on the agenda in Armenia, emphasizing a focus on evaluating the potential benefits and risks associated with EU membership.
