In the first nine months of 2024, Armenia’s international airports - Zvartnots and Shirak - served over 4.1 million passengers.
Despite a slight 2% decline in passenger traffic compared to the same period last year, the figures significantly exceed the pre-pandemic level of 2019, when 2.4 million passengers passed through Armenian airports.
According to Corporación América Airports, the cargo transportation segment has shown notable growth. From January to September 2024, Armenian airports handled 28,070 tons of cargo, which is 14.7% more than in the same period in 2023. For comparison, the volume of cargo transportation in 2019 was 13,697 tons.
Meanwhile, the total number of flights serviced in 2024 was 30,070, which is 12.1% fewer than the previous year. However, even with this reduction, the current figures far surpass the 2019 level, when 20,424 flights were operated.
Currently, only two Armenian airports—Yerevan’s Zvartnots and Gyumri’s Shirak—handle international flights. The country’s main air gateway, Zvartnots Airport in Yerevan, is under the concession management of Armenia International Airports CJSC, owned by Argentine entrepreneur of Armenian descent Eduardo Eurnekian.
It is worth noting that after Western sanctions were imposed on Russia, the load on Zvartnots Airport significantly increased due to changes in routes of European airlines bypassing Russian airspace.
These factors led to a record growth in Armenia’s civil aviation indicators in 2023.
