Cards of the Russian payment system "Mir" will stop working in ATMs and POS terminals of most banks in Armenia from March 30, 2024, with the exception of the infrastructure of VTB Armenia (a subsidiary of the Russian VTB), RBC reports, citing a representative of VTB Armenia.
Currently, "Mir" cards are operational in Armenia and are accepted by local banks. A source in the Russian payment market also indicates the imminent cessation of "Mir" card operations in most banks in the country.
This is due to the fact that the operator of "Mir" cards came under US sanctions in February of this year.
"From March 30, users will no longer be able to make non-cash payments at POS terminals and withdraw cash from ATMs of other banks in the republic. This will not affect the operation of VTB (Armenia) cards," said a representative of VTB Armenia, adding that the bank continues to fully service "Mir" cards.
VTB operates 53 branches in Armenia, 22 of which are located in Yerevan. Clients also have access to more than 190 ATMs throughout the country.
