The Customs Service of the State Revenue Committee of Armenia has been equipped with new X-ray devices and radiation detection equipment.
The installation ceremony at the Apaven customs warehouse was attended by the Chairman of the Committee, Rustam Badasyan, and the US Ambassador to Armenia Kristina Kvien. The equipment was acquired with the support of the US State Department’s Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) Program and the US Department of Energy’s Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) Program.
On June 11, 2024, during the concluding session of the Armenia-US Strategic Dialogue, an agreement on mutual assistance between the customs authorities of the two countries was signed. This agreement aims to enhance cooperation in border security and facilitate trade procedures.
Chairman Rustam Badasyan emphasized the importance of international cooperation in strengthening nuclear and radiation safety. He expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to this initiative. The new equipment will significantly enhance the capabilities for detecting nuclear and radioactive materials, thereby bolstering national and global security.
US Ambassador Kristina Kvien noted that this is an important step in enhancing border security and promoting trade between Armenia and the USA. The event highlighted the importance of ongoing cooperation and joint programs, underscoring the strong friendship between the two countries.
The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting, symbolizing the provision of equipment worth over $13 million by the United States. The implementation of the new equipment will improve the efficiency of the customs service, aiding in the protection of Armenia’s borders and national interests.
