Armenia's foreign trade in Jan up by 93.8% to nearly $1.3 bln

Armenia’s foreign trade in January 2023 amounted to about $1.3 billion, which is 93.8% more than in January 2022, the National Statistical Committee said.

However, compared to December last year, the foreign trade in January 2023 was down 18.3%. In January 2023, the volume of foreign trade turnover in Armenian drams amounted to 514.4 billion.

Armenian exports in January 2023 increased 2.3-fold against the same period of 2022, amounting to $572.8mln. In January, a decrease of 1.1% was registered against December 2022. In January 2023, exports in drams stood at 226.6 billion.

Imports during the reporting period amounted to $727.1 million, registering a 72.5% growth compared to January 2022. Compared to December 2022 imports were down 28.2%. In drams they amounted to 287.8 billion.

Armenia's trade with CIS countries more than doubled from January 2022 to about $578.7 million. The largest foreign trade partners were Russia ($543. 3 million, 2.4 fold increase against the first month of 2022), Belarus (about $19 million, 2.2 fold increase) and Ukraine (about $8.6 million, 13.4% decrease).

Armenia's trade with EU countries amounted to over $195.6 million, a 50% year-on-year growth. The five biggest trade partners were Germany ($51.8 million, 2.1 times rise), the Netherlands ($35.3 million, 39.3% rise, Italy ($25.8 million, 69.5% rise), France ($13.6 million, 5.2 times rise) and Poland ($10.6 million, 2.6 times rise).

Trade with China grew by almost 45% to $142 million, trade with USA surged by 3.4 times to $49.5 million and that with UAE grew by almost 11 times to $49.2 million. Also trade with Iran upped 12.5% to $47.1 million, trade with Japan grew by 5/6 times to 31.2 million and trade with Iraq grew by 25.2% to $19.6 million.

Armenian exports to the CIS countries amounted to $373.2 million, having increased by 5 times compared to the same period last year. Exports to Russia grew by 5.2 times to $355 million, 5.2 times growth, exports to Belarus amounted to $13.1 million, 6.1 times growth and exports to Kazakhstan grew five fold to $2.5 million.

Exports to the EU countries decreased by 4.3% $54.1 million. The first three largest importers of Armenian goods were the Netherlands ($30.2 million, up 29.5%), Germany ($8 million, up 43.6%) and Belgium ($4.9 million, up 34.8%).

Exports to the UAE grew by 14 times to $46.6 million, exports to China upped 12% to $40.5 million, exports to Iraq grew by almost 26 % to $19.6 million, exports to Switzerland grew by 48.2% to $11.9 million and exports to Iran fell by 1.2% to $8.4 million.

Armenia’s largest exports were land, air and water vehicles ($190.8 million, 97 times growth compared to January 2022), mining industry goods - ($72.7 million, decrease of 15.7%), precious and semi-precious stones, precious metals - $64.9 million, up 99.3%, finished food products - $62 million, up 26.4%, equipment and machinery - $57 million, 10.5 times growth.

Armenian imports from the CIS amounted to $204.3 million, having increased by 6.3%. Imports from Russia fell by 8% to $187.2 million, imports from Ukraine decreased by 13.6% to $8.3 million and imports from Belarus slashed by 20% to $5.4 million.

Imports from the EU countries rose by 2.4 times during the reporting period, amounting to $163.9 million. Imports from Germany grew 2.4 times to $48.2 million, imports from Poland upped by 6 times to $20.4 million and imports from the Netherlands grew by 2.7 times to $13.6 million.

Imports from Georgia more than doubled to $62.2 million, imports from the USA grew by 5 times to $61.8 million and imports from China grew by 30% to $48.6 million

Armenia’s largest imports were machinery and equipment - $166 million (2.8 times growth), land, air and water vehicles - $140.9 million (6 times growth), mining industry goods - $99.6 million (0.4% growth), precious and semi-precious stones, precious metals - $39 million d (4-fold growth), ARKA reports.
