Under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, a meeting was held in the government of Armenia on May 3 to discuss key issues in the sphere of water resources.
According to the government's press service, the meeting addressed issues related to water resource management, policies on water supply and irrigation, as well as issues concerning Lake Sevan and the Ararat artesian basin.
Participants of the meeting made proposals to address current issues in the sphere of water supply and irrigation. Special attention was given to the need for developing comprehensive measures for the efficient use of water resources, reducing losses, and improving the financial stability of the system.
In this context, the Prime Minister instructed the creation of an interdepartmental working group that will develop an action plan to address current issues in the sphere of water resources and present it within the year.
According to expert data, Armenia's irrigation system loses between 40% and 45% of water due to several reasons.
Firstly, this is linked to an outdated system established during Soviet times. Secondly, improper selection of agricultural crops contributes to water loss. Thirdly, a significant portion of the system operates using surface soil irrigation methods, which also increases water loss. Fourthly, some land plots are not prepared before irrigation, leading to additional water losses.
