Around 21,000 Georgian seafarers are currently employed across various fleets worldwide, according to the director of Georgia’s Maritime Transport Agency, Ivane Abashidze. He said Batumi State Maritime Academy plays a key role in preparing qualified maritime professionals who meet international standards.
Abashidze noted that Georgian seafarers are employed in around 80% of the global merchant fleet, while certificates of maritime competency issued by Georgia are recognized by approximately 90% of the world’s maritime flags.
According to the agency’s director, strengthening Georgia’s position in the international maritime sector directly improves employment opportunities for Georgian specialists. He said the agency’s efforts have helped ensure recognition of Georgian seafarers’ qualifications by European Union member states and major international maritime registries.
“Batumi State Maritime Academy is the main center where Georgian seafarers are trained. Today, Georgia has up to 21,000 seafarers working on around 80% of the world’s tonnage. Georgia’s maritime certifications are also recognized by up to 90% of the world’s maritime flags, including EU member states and leading reputable registries,” Abashidze said.
