Construction of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port has entered a new and more complex stage, with dredging of the entrance channel and turning basin now underway, according to Ivane Abashidze, Director of Georgia’s Maritime Transport Agency.
Two vessels from the fleet of Belgian company Jan De Nul Group – Al-Idrisi and Tristao Da Cunha – are carrying out the works simultaneously. Abashidze said the progress would strengthen partners’ confidence in Georgia’s transport and logistics sector and help retain the growing cargo flows in the country’s transit corridor.
Eric Bates, Jan De Nul’s Project Director for Anaklia, said the deep-sea port is an important project for Georgia’s economy, supporting employment and contributing to GDP growth. The company is working with internationally recognized engineering firm Royal Haskoning to develop an optimized design while maintaining efficiency and quality.
According to Bates, the two vessels can perform more than 70,000 cubic meters of dredging per day. Jan De Nul expects to complete the dredging works on schedule and provide an entrance channel with a depth of 17.5 meters, allowing the largest vessels to enter the Black Sea port.
