Azerbaijan plans to increase electricity exports to the European market and expand its export routes, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated in an interview with Azerbaijani television.
According to Aliyev, the country has more than enough energy resources, and following oil and gas, the goal is to scale up electricity supplies to Europe.
"Today, the only existing route passes through Georgia and Turkey, from where it heads toward Europe. We must expand these capabilities. Specifically, the feasibility study for the Black Sea Subsea Cable project is already complete. However, the existence of a second transmission line will only reinforce our potential," Aliyev stated.
The President of Azerbaijan also emphasized that the country's energy system is currently closely interconnected with neighboring nations—Russia, Iran, Georgia, and, through Georgia, Turkey.
Parallel to increasing its export capacity, Azerbaijan is also working on alternative routes. According to Aliyev, the Zangezur energy corridor project—which will connect Nakhchivan through Armenia, and from there link to Turkey and Europe—will serve as an additional guarantee of energy stability in the region.
Furthermore, Aliyev noted that a project to lay an electric cable across the bed of the Caspian Sea in cooperation with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan is under active consideration, which will position Azerbaijan not only as an energy producer but also as a major transit hub.
