The Chair of the Parliamentary Commission on Prices, MP Shota Berekashvili, says work is underway on improving a “Greek basket”-style model aimed at monitoring and managing food prices, alongside other planned initiatives. He made the comments in an interview with BMG.
His remarks come after Deputy Prime Minister Mamuka Mdinaradze stated on June 13 that the government expects the agreement between the state and the private sector on basic food products to ensure long-term price stabilization and at least short-term relief for consumers. He also noted that all relevant agencies would review the details within one to two weeks.
Responding to questions about implementation and future steps, Berikashvili said monitoring is ongoing and that no specifics can yet be disclosed. He added that the commission remains in constant contact with retail chains regarding products included in the “household basket,” with weekly updates on the best offers and prices.
“We have more plans, so wait and you will hear good information,” he said, adding that both short- and medium-term measures are being developed, including further refinement of the Greek basket-type model. A related initiative will also see a public portal launched to provide consumers with updated information on prices and offers for essential goods across retail chains.
