Parliamentary Price Commission Chair Shota Berekashvili says no supermarket chain will be required to join the new “Family Basket” platform, though he is confident that market competition will naturally push every retailer to participate. He made the comments when asked whether all major chains would appear on the platform being developed by the Competition Agency.
According to Berekashvili, the goal is to build a transparent, competitive sector that offers consumers the best prices. He stressed that the government operates on free-market principles, meaning no business will be forced into the system, but competition itself will encourage participation.
The Georgian Dream MP welcomed the agency’s initiative, saying the new platform will create more structured, systematized relations among supermarket chains and improve price transparency for consumers.
Earlier today, the Competition and Consumer Protection Agency announced it will launch an online portal listing best offers and prices for basic products included in the “Family Basket” program. Under the new rules, participating supermarket networks must provide updated price information weekly, which will be published on the platform in an electronic basket format.
