The best solution to the crisis in Georgia is to organize new elections, which will be in line with ODIHR’s recommendations. This is our path forward; otherwise, we will see that the overall democratic situation in Georgia is deteriorating, and that is not in our interest, - said the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kaunas Budris, to journalists before the start of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels.
“We are seeing reports that the Georgian people, who want a European future, have been protesting in the streets for over 50 days, which obliges us to respond. Let us recall the last meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council, where we missed the opportunity to send a strong message and implement strong restrictive measures, as we did in Lithuania, and some other countries followed our example. This must continue. The best solution to the crisis in Georgia is to organize new elections in line with ODIHR’s recommendations. This is our way forward; otherwise, we will see that the overall democratic situation in Georgia is deteriorating, and that is not in our interest,” the minister emphasized.
