Certain Forces in the EU Bureaucracy Negatively Influence Decisions on Georgia - Kobakhidze

ირაკლი კობახიძე

GD Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that he does not believe it is in the European Union’s objective interest to support revolutions in Georgia but suggested that certain forces within the EU bureaucracy negatively influence decision-making. He made the comments in an interview with TRT World.

According to Kobakhidze, “Just before the coup attempt in Georgia on October 4, when the opposition tried to break into the presidential building, the European Commission’s spokesperson supported this action, calling it a ‘peaceful coup.’ These are the facts,” he said, emphasizing that such actions go against the EU’s long-term interests in Georgia.

The Prime Minister also accused the EU Ambassador to Georgia of showing direct political bias during the 2024 parliamentary elections. “We have video recordings where the EU Ambassador clearly expressed support for the opposition and made statements against the ruling party. Is this consistent with democratic principles? Of course not,” Kobakhidze claimed.

He concluded that these incidents reflect how parts of the European bureaucracy have taken steps that undermine democratic values. However, Kobakhidze expressed hope that the EU’s overall stance toward the Georgian people would “become more balanced and fair.”
