Georgia’s Roads Department has signed a GEL 499 million contract with China Railway Tunnel Group Co., Ltd. to build a 7.3-kilometer section of the Tbilisi Bypass Road.
The Tsitsamuri–Avchala section will include a four-lane highway and two parallel tunnels, each forming part of a 3.4-kilometer tunnel system, alongside bridges and road interchanges. It will connect to the 22.5-kilometer Avchala–Airport section, for which a GEL 932 million tender is still underway.
Infrastructure Minister Revaz Sokhadze said the contractor for the Avchala–Airport section is expected to be selected soon, with construction on additional sections set to advance in the coming months.
China Railway Tunnel Group is also involved in several major Georgian infrastructure projects, including the Kvesheti–Kobi tunnel and the Stepantsminda–Gveleti road section. In September 2026, it signed a separate GEL 809 million contract to build the Batumi–Sarpi highway, including a 7.6-kilometer tunnel.
The Avchala–Airport section will largely follow the route of Tbilisi’s former bypass railway and is expected to be the most expensive segment of the overall bypass project.
