Giorgi Kobulia, former Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, says that the sanctions imposed by the US on Georgian citizens are a negative message for investors. He stated that while visiting TV-Program Business Course and noted that damage of democracy will cause foreign investors to lose interest in Georgia.
"Of course, the current situation is a very bad signal for the international business community and Georgian businessmen. Financial sanctions are a signal that the USA, as one of the leaders of the Western democratic world, believes that we are a country where the law does not rule, where human rights are violated and democracy does not work.
It is already very difficult for us to bring in a foreign investor in the country. We are not China with a huge market. We don't have special skills to attract the attention of investors. What interests us and attracts investors who have come in recent years, including those who escaped from Russia, is that we had some level of democracy. If we do not advance this democracy and destroy it, it will cause a negative reaction among investors and will have a long-term negative effect on our economy", Giorgi Kobulia said.
