Design Firms Should Stay Involved in Infrastructure Projects – Construction Service

Construction companies in Georgia say changes are needed in the way design firms participate in infrastructure projects. According to Giorgi Gabunia, founder of Construction Service, design companies are typically no longer involved once a public tender is announced, creating challenges during the implementation phase.

Gabunia argues that design firms should be required to remain engaged until projects are completed. He said the proposal was presented to government officials during an expanded public-private dialogue meeting organized with the support of the Infrastructure Builders Association.

He noted that virtually every infrastructure project requires clarifications or design adjustments during construction. Keeping the original designers involved would enable faster and more efficient decision-making, as they possess all the technical calculations and documentation related to the project.

According to Gabunia, construction supervisors often lack the authority or sufficient information to make technical decisions independently. Requiring design firms to participate throughout the implementation process, he said, would improve coordination, reduce delays, and help ensure higher-quality project delivery.
