A EUR 6.5 million project to build a wastewater treatment system at Tbilisi’s municipal solid waste landfill has started, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said.
The project is being implemented under a loan agreement between Georgia and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the Tbilisi Solid Waste Project. Construction is being carried out by Gumbati LLC, selected through an EBRD electronic procurement tender.
Kaladze said the landfill’s current condition does not meet required standards and that the municipality aims to fully modernize it with support from international financial institutions and foreign specialists.
The project is expected to be completed and operational by September 2027. A construction permit was issued by the Technical and Construction Supervision Agency in September, while the municipality is also working on further measures to fully upgrade the landfill.
