Georgia imported 20,423 units of eggs worth $1.4 million in January-August 2026, compared with 1,018 units worth $53,600 in the same period last year, marking a 2,620% increase in value.
Imports came from two countries, with Turkey accounting for the bulk: 18,873 units worth $1.3 million. Belarus supplied another 1,550 units valued at $155,500.
The Poultry Development Association says the increase is linked to surplus production in Turkey. Association head Zurab Uchumbegashvili said Turkish producers previously exported more to the US amid high demand caused by bird flu, but redirected surplus supplies to Georgia after the US market stabilized.
Some local poultry producers, however, say privately that the rise in imports is also linked to an egg shortage in Georgia caused by poultry disease.
