Electricity consumption in Georgia up by 2% in 1H24

Between January and June 2024, Georgia consumed 7.66 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, which was 2% or 144 million kilowatt hours more than in the same period of the previous year.

Along with the increase in electricity consumption, the volume of local hydro generation increased in 2024. As a whole, the hydropower plants in the country generated 6 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, which was 13.4% more than the previous year.

Taking into account the increase in production, electricity exports to Georgia decreased amounting to 457 million kilowatt hours, which was 24% less than the previous year, or 143 million kilowatt hours.

As a result, the share of local hydro generation of Georgia met 79% of consumption. For comparison, in the same period of 2023, the share of hydro generation in local consumption was 71%.

As for the exports from Georgia to other countries, its volume remained almost unchanged (an increase of 1 million kilowatt hours) and amounted to 757 million kilowatt hours in January-June, of which 634 million kilowatt hours were exported to Turkey, 90 million kilowatt hours to Armenia, and 32 million kilowatt hours to Azerbaijan.
