Georgia began importing electricity from Turkey in October, receiving 11.4 million kWh between October 5 and 11, according to operational data from the Electricity System Commercial Operator (ESCO).
Unlike last year, Georgia has not imported electricity from Russia since April 2026. In 2025, Russian electricity imports began in August and continued throughout the autumn, while Turkey appeared among Georgia’s electricity suppliers only in December.
This summer, the Georgian government activated an electricity exchange, or barter, mechanism with Turkey. Under the arrangement, ESCO exported electricity from Georgia to Turkey between May and July 2026, on the condition that Turkey return the same volume of electricity during September-November.
A similar arrangement was also in place in 2018, allowing the two countries to exchange electricity seasonally.
