Electricity Market Operator ESCO published a report for 1Q2022. According to the report, Georgia consumed 3.9 terawatt hours of electricity, which was 13% more compared to the same period of 2022.
The document reads, that local electricity generation has increased this year. Namely, hydropower plants generated 1.5 terawatt hours of electricity (up by 18%), while thermal power plants - 1.45 billion terawatt hours (up by 71%). As a result, local generation in the country increased by 38% to 3 terawatt hours. Last year, the largest HPP in the country was stopped for rehabilitation, due to which local electricity generation was down.
However, electricity imports have decreased into the country due to the grown local energy generation. In 1Q2022, the country has purchased a total of 1.1 terawatt hours of electricity, which is 24% less compared to the previous year.
Electricity Imports By Countries:
Imports from Russia (for the region of Abkhazia) - 652 million kilowatt hours;
Imports from Russia to the rest of Georgia - 187 million kilowatt hours;
Imports from Armenia - 138.4 million kilowatt hours;
Imports from Azerbaijan - 119.2 million kilowatt hours.
According to ESCO, Georgia did not buy a single million-kilowatt hours of electricity from Armenia in the last three years. Consequently, for the first time in recent years, Georgia has started importing electricity from Armenia.
