The Georgian Energy Development Fund is currently working on renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of around 350 MW, as well as electricity access projects in mountainous areas, the fund’s Director of Project Management Tamaz Akhvlediani told BMG.
According to Akhvlediani, the portfolio includes solar, wind and hydropower projects at different stages of development. Some are under construction or entering operation, while others are undergoing feasibility studies and are expected to move to the construction phase in the near future.
Alongside large-scale energy infrastructure, the fund is working to electrify households in mountainous areas that remain without access to electricity. By the end of September, a project is expected to be completed under which solar systems and battery storage units are being installed in households in off-grid settlements.
“In the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, specifically in Dusheti Municipality, solar panels are currently being installed for 58 families. Once completed, they will have a fully independent electricity source. This process will continue step by step until there are no households left without electricity in the country,” Akhvlediani said. The fund estimates that only several hundred permanently inhabited households nationwide remain without electricity.
