Georgia’s Energy Development Fund is actively involved in the study and research process for the Khudoni HPP project, with the main objective of identifying and assessing possible alternatives to the original project, according to Tamaz Akhveldiani, the Fund’s Director of Project Management.
Akhveldiani told BMG that Khudoni, Namakhvani and Nenskra are all technically viable strategic projects, although significant challenges remain on the social side, particularly in relations with local communities.
“All three projects are viable, but everyone knows there were major social problems in relations with the population. Work is currently underway to raise awareness and provide people with more objective information,” Akhveldiani said.
He added that the projects are important for Georgia’s energy sector and energy security. According to Akhveldiani, the Fund regularly holds meetings and awareness campaigns around hydropower projects to explain their potential benefits and address concerns about their impact on local communities.
