The government plans to add 1,300 MW of wind and 1,700 MW of solar capacity to Georgia’s energy system by 2031, according to an official video released by the government on renewable energy development.
At present, the state has signed agreements with private companies for 34 wind energy projects, of which 29 are still in the study phase and five are under construction. Officials say renewable energy expansion remains a key policy priority.
In addition to wind and solar, the plan includes 1,000 MW of hydropower projects by 2031. By 2036, including balancing and regulating power plants, the system is expected to gain a total of around 2,800 MW in additional capacity.
Currently, Georgia’s energy system includes only two operational wind farms with a total capacity of about 40 MW and solar plants totaling just 11 MW. The country’s overall installed capacity stands at approximately 4,800 MW, with plans to reach around 11,500 MW in the coming years.
