The European Parliament has adopted a new resolution on Georgia, sharply criticizing the country’s political trajectory and calling for immediate and targeted personal sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party.

According to the resolution, Ivanishvili and other Georgian Dream leaders bear direct responsibility for Georgia’s democratic backsliding. The document accuses them of pursuing policies that contradict the Euro-Atlantic course enshrined in Georgia’s constitution and supported by the majority of its population.

The European Parliament specifically urges the European Union, in cooperation with other jurisdictions, notably the United Kingdom, to impose sanctions on Ivanishvili, including the freezing of his financial assets, along with those of his family members and affiliated companies.

This is the strongest call yet from an EU institution for direct action against Ivanishvili, reflecting mounting international concern over Georgia’s democratic regression, suppression of civil society, and deterioration of relations with Western partners.

The resolution is part of a broader push by the European Parliament to hold the Georgian government accountable for its actions and to support the Georgian people’s European aspirations.
