The European Parliament will discuss the draft resolution on the request for sanctions against members of "Georgian Dream" and Bidzina Ivanishvili, and will hold a vote on April 25. The draft of the relevant resolution entitled - "Attempts to resubmit the draft law on foreign agents in Georgia and restriction of civil society" has been uploaded on the website of the European Parliament.
Today, on April 23, it is planned to discuss the draft resolution, in which the High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell, will participate together with the MEPs. On April 25, they will vote on the resolution.
The draft resolution states that the European Union should introduce sanctions against all members of the Parliament of Georgia who voted for the adoption of the draft law on "transparency of foreign influence".
Also, if the resolution is approved, the European Parliament will repeat its call to the Council of the European Union to introduce sanctions against the honorary chairman of "Georgian Dream", Bidzina Ivanishvili.
The European Parliament also appeals to the European Commission to make all financial assistance to Georgia dependent on the draft law "On transparency of foreign influence" being passed.
The draft resolution notes that the re-submission of the bill contradicts the public comments made by Georgian officials in 2023, therefore, Georgia's reputation is damaged and its Euro-Atlantic aspirations are undermined, since the "foreign influences" bill puts Georgia on the same path as the Russian Federation and similar countries. they are.
The draft resolution also mentions that the "foreign influence" legislation submitted by "Georgian Dream" is modeled after the law adopted in Russia in 2012, and similar draft laws were recently adopted in Kyrgyzstan and occupied Abkhazia.
The draft resolution states that similar Russian-style "agents of foreign influence" bill will significantly damage Georgia's pro-European path, and if the bill is passed, any decision to start negotiations on joining the European Union for Georgia should be permanently suspended.
