The European Parliament reminds us of the Soviet Union’s Supreme Soviet once again, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said, commenting on a resolution concerning Georgian Dream’s constitutional lawsuit.

According to Kobakhidze, the European Parliament and the European bureaucracy as a whole are in a very difficult state.

“We are often urged to use different rhetoric toward European institutions, but when the European Parliament adopts such resolutions and holds debates of this nature, it is difficult to make positive comments or even refrain from criticism. Through these actions, the European Parliament reminds us of the Soviet Supreme Soviet. I believe the latter was in a much better state in the 1980s, during the final years of the Soviet Union. The European Parliament and the European bureaucracy are in a dire situation, as these debates and documents demonstrate. Georgian society is no longer interested in this,” Kobakhidze said.

On October 8, the European Parliament adopted another critical resolution on Georgia by 445 votes to 37, with eight abstentions. It condemns Georgian Dream’s efforts to ban opposition parties, calls for the release of political prisoners and urges sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili, Irakli Kobakhidze, Shalva Papuashvili and Kakha Kaladze over democratic backsliding. The resolution also warns of worsening media freedom, human rights and the rule of law, stressing that outlawing legitimate opposition is incompatible with democracy.
