The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has arrested former Handball Federation President Zurab Kakabadze on charges of misappropriating GEL 464,496. According to officials, the case involves large-scale financial misconduct committed during his tenure as head of the Federation.
At a briefing, the Prosecutor’s Office stated that the investigation revealed Kakabadze had used the Federation’s corporate bank cards to withdraw GEL 464,496 from various ATMs and spent the funds for personal purposes between 2019 and 2021. The alleged actions caused significant financial damage to the organization. The investigation was initiated following a report from the State Audit Office, which identified irregularities in the Federation’s financial activities.
The Prosecutor’s Office charged Kakabadze under Article 182, Part 2, Subparagraphs “d” and “b” of Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which pertains to the misappropriation of a large sum of money through abuse of official authority. The offense carries a potential prison sentence of seven to eleven years.
Prosecutors announced that they will apply to the court to seek pre-trial detention as a preventive measure. The investigation into the case continues as authorities work to determine whether other individuals might have been involved in the misappropriation scheme.
