From 2027, Plastic-Packaged Food and Drinks Will Be Banned in Georgia – Kobakhidze

კობახიძე სონღულაშვილი

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that starting February 1, 2027, the production, import, and sale of food and beverages in plastic packaging will be prohibited in Georgia. The move aims to reduce environmental impact and minimize the health risks of microplastics for humans.

Kobakhidze noted that studies link plastic use in food contact materials to serious health concerns, including oncological, reproductive, nervous, and hormonal problems. The government has developed a gradual implementation model that balances public health, environmental protection, and economic interests.

Initial steps have already been taken: some single-use plastic tableware has been banned, and food establishments will face restrictions in serving plastic-packaged food. The full ban, with certain exceptions for specific product categories, will come into effect in 2027.

According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, these measures aim to protect both the environment and citizen health, while giving businesses sufficient time to adapt to the new regulations.
