In 11M2024, Georgia consumed almost 2.6 billion cubic meters of gas. Compared to the corresponding period in 2023, gas consumption has decreased slightly. This is evident from the monthly energy statistics published by Geostat.
One of the reasons for the decrease in gas consumption is gas-fired thermal power plants. In previous years, due to the high exporting price of electricity, the government operated thermal power plants, however, last year electricity became cheaper in Turkey, so it was probably not cost-effective for the state to operate thermal power plants.
According to Azerbaijan Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov, 2.4 billion cubic meters of gas were exported to Georgia in 2024. This was 100 million cubic meters less than the 2023 figure. It is worth noting that in recent years, imports of Azerbaijani gas to Georgia have been decreasing. According to Geostat, Georgia paid Azerbaijan USD 217.6 million in natural gas in 11 months.
