Georgia aims to transition to a modern waste management system in which waste is treated as a resource, Environment and Agriculture Minister Davit Songulashvili said at the opening of a new medical waste treatment facility operated by Scrap. The new plant will safely neutralize hazardous medical and infectious waste without incineration.
Songulashvili said waste management requires a systemic approach, modern infrastructure and continuous monitoring. He added that the ministry is working to develop waste management infrastructure and facilities for hazardous waste, while encouraging private-sector investment in the sector.
According to the ministry, the ECOSTERYL technology is being introduced in Georgia and the South Caucasus for the first time. The system uses microwave technology to treat medical and infectious waste without incineration and operates entirely on electricity, producing dry, sterile and safe material while reducing the risk of toxic emissions.
The ministry said the new facility will help modernize medical waste management, improve operational safety and introduce contemporary environmental standards. The project is based on European and international practices and is expected to expand the use of environmentally safe technologies in Georgia’s waste management sector. The opening event was also attended by Deputy Environment and Agriculture Minister Solomon Pavliashvili and Solid Waste Management Company Director Mikheil Gogolidze.
