The Georgian government is launching a major infrastructure project to construct a new four-lane highway from Rustavi to Sadakhlo, which will connect Armenia to the international E60 highway.
According to the "News-Georgia" agency, the country's Ministry of Economy has already issued an order for the expropriation of land from property owners in the Marneuli district for this purpose.
The project, valued at €250 million, is financed by the European Investment Bank as part of a loan agreement for the development of the East-West international road. The new highway, approximately 30 kilometers long, will run parallel to the existing road and will include 11 bridges and overpasses.
This construction is of strategic importance not only for Georgia but also for Armenia. The new road will provide Armenia with:
- Direct access to the international E60 highway
- An indirect link to the European East-West international highway project
- A compact transport corridor through Georgian territory
The significance of this project for both countries was highlighted back in 2021 by former Georgian Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Irakli Karseladze, who described it as a pivotal development for both Georgia and Armenia.
Experts note that the implementation of this project could significantly improve Armenia's transport accessibility and contribute to its economic integration with European countries, opening up new opportunities for trade and tourism.
