The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia held a working meeting with business representatives to discuss a draft regulation on the sale of beverages in plastic bottles. The planned changes were presented by First Deputy Minister Nino Tandilashvili and Deputy Ministers Solomon Pavliashvili and Zurab Ezugbaia.

The ministry stated that the initiative aims both to strengthen environmental policy and to create practical support mechanisms for businesses, allowing the sector to adapt to new regulations.

Deputy Minister Pavliashvili said the reform focuses on reducing the use of plastic in food and beverages. “We need to gradually start regulating plastic bottle consumption. The public sector will face restrictions first, followed by restaurants and catering businesses. We are working closely with the private sector to ensure that every step is coordinated,” he explained.

Levan Vefkhvadze, Executive Director of the Georgian Business Association, emphasized the importance of collaboration. “Reducing plastic use requires consistent steps. Decisions must have minimal impact on both businesses and consumers. A balance must be maintained, taking into account all stakeholders’ opinions,” he said.

The draft regulation specifically targets the purchase of beverages in plastic bottles by budgetary organizations and the hospitality sector. The ministry highlighted that a phased implementation schedule will give businesses sufficient time to adapt. Consultations and working meetings with the business community will continue as the regulation is finalized.
