Georgia’s Ministry of Health, led by Mikheil Sarjveladze, held another meeting of the commission working on reference pricing for medicines. The discussion focused on the current pricing environment in the pharmaceutical market and the effectiveness of the ongoing reform.

The ministry recently announced that, following recommendations from a parliamentary price review commission, reference prices will be set for around 700 additional frequently used medicines. These include drugs for inflammatory conditions, cardiovascular diseases, and other commonly prescribed treatments, continuing the reform launched in 2023.

During the meeting, commission members reviewed market conditions, existing medicine prices, and the functioning of the reference pricing system. They also emphasized the need to further develop the framework, strengthen monitoring mechanisms, and align future decisions with international best practices.

Under Georgia’s reference pricing reform, the state sets a maximum allowable price for medicines, above which they cannot be sold. The system already covers more than 7,500 drugs, and according to the ministry, it has contributed to an average price reduction of about 40%.
