“Georgia has joined and adhered to all international sanctions,” said Shota Berekashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Policy of the Georgian Dream party, in response to a question from BMG.
The UK and the US have already imposed sanctions on the Russian oil company Lukoil.
When asked whether the sanctions would apply to the company’s Georgian subsidiary, Berekashvili said he does not yet have detailed information about the specific type of sanctions imposed on the oil company, which also operates in Georgia.
“I do not have detailed information about this, so I cannot state my position. I only have information that is publicly available. What type of sanctions are there - that matters. Georgia has joined and adhered to all international sanctions; however, in areas of economic activity not affected by sanctions, we have taken politically correct steps and done what was important for our economy,” said Shota Berekashvili.
On October 22, the United States imposed financial sanctions on the Russian energy giant Lukoil and all its subsidiaries in which it holds more than 50% ownership. One such company is the Austrian-registered LUKOIL International GmbH, which owns 100% of Lukoil Georgia. Accordingly, the financial sanctions are likely to apply to the company’s Georgian subsidiary as well.
BMG also contacted Lukoil Georgia regarding the sanctions, but the company has so far refrained from commenting.
