Tamara Ioseliani, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, stated that Georgia’s government actively communicated with European institutions regarding the Kulevi port, ensuring it was excluded from the EU’s 20th sanctions package. She emphasized that the authorities provided detailed information on mechanisms preventing the use of Georgian infrastructure to bypass international sanctions.

“Working closely with the EU, Georgia continues to enforce sanctions rigorously. Our ports operate under strict controls, ensuring that sanctioned vessels or prohibited operations are not serviced. We provided European partners with full and comprehensive information, which led to the decision to exclude Kulevi port from the 20th sanctions package,” Ioseliani said.

The EU presented the 20th sanctions package in early February, aimed at reducing Russian revenue from oil to pressure Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. Initially, the package included Kulevi port, but its inclusion was blocked after Georgia demonstrated effective safeguards.
