The Georgian government is reinstating its subsidy program for non-standard apples, which was discontinued earlier this year. Under an October 8 government decree signed by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, the state will provide a subsidy of GEL 0.10 per kilogram to companies purchasing apples for at least GEL 0.25 per kilogram. The program has a budget of GEL 4.5 million, with subsidies available through December 18.

The program was discontinued after 10 years, with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture previously saying it preferred to support farmers by improving production quality and productivity. Under the reinstated scheme, the Rural Development Agency will establish a coordination headquarters, while the Ministry of Internal Affairs will oversee the apple delivery process, maintain order and ensure safety.

Companies wishing to receive and process apples must register with the agency, sign an agreement before starting operations and have the required equipment, including internet access of at least 10 Mbps, a computer and a multifunction printer. Apples must be weighed using electronic scales, and facilities must have a video surveillance system with at least four cameras. Companies must retain recordings until April 30, 2027, and submit acceptance documents, proof of payment and full video footage to the agency by December 25, 2026.

The Rural Development Agency may hire an additional 26 people on employment contracts to carry out temporary tasks related to the program. According to agency data, the subsidy scheme operated from 2014 to 2025, during which processors purchased 309.9 million kilograms of non-standard apples worth GEL 74.1 million. A total of GEL 28 million in subsidies was provided to 24 processing companies.
