Georgia’s government set a one-time GEL 10,000 compensation for internally displaced persons (IDPs) who decline state-provided housing based on available budget resources, Deputy Finance Minister Giorgi Kakauridze said. He declined to detail the calculations or criteria used to determine the amount.
The program launched on October 19, with applications accepted until November 2. The Health Ministry expects around 5,800 applicants, putting the projected budget at GEL 58 million.
The offer has drawn criticism from IDPs who say GEL 10,000 is insufficient to secure housing. Kakauridze stressed that participation is voluntary and applicants can choose to wait for state-provided accommodation.
He said the government expects strong demand and will seek to allocate sufficient funding, including through budget adjustments, to cover the compensation payments.
Eligible IDP families who have not received housing or compensation from the state can apply at Public Service Halls nationwide. Payments will be issued in application order, with each eligible family member entitled to GEL 10,000.
