The Georgian government has introduced stricter labeling requirements for processed meat products, including sausages and other similar products, as part of changes to food information regulations. The amendments, signed by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, aim to improve consumer awareness and prevent misleading claims on product packaging.

Under the new rules, manufacturers will only be allowed to highlight a specific type of animal meat on the front of the package — such as “beef sausage” or “pork sausage” — if that meat accounts for more than 50% of the total meat content used in the product. The requirement applies to the main visible area of the packaging, where consumers first see product information.

The updated regulation also clarifies that the term “animal meat” does not include mechanically separated meat. This means that such processed material will not be counted when calculating whether a product meets the 50% threshold required to use a specific meat name on its label.

The changes will not take effect immediately. Producers and importers will have time to adapt their products and packaging to the new standards, with the updated labeling requirements coming into force on January 1, 2027.
