Georgia will double the maximum amount of deposits covered by the country’s deposit insurance system, raising the limit from GEL 50,000 to GEL 100,000. The change was approved by an order of the head of the Deposit Insurance Agency and will take effect on January 1, 2027.

Georgia’s deposit insurance system was introduced in January 2018, initially covering deposits up to GEL 5,000. The coverage limit was subsequently increased to GEL 15,000 in July 2020, GEL 30,000 in January 2024 and GEL 50,000 in April 2025.

Under the new rules, depositors will be eligible for insurance coverage of up to GEL 100,000. The increase is intended to expand the level of protection provided to depositors under the country’s deposit insurance framework.

According to data cited under Georgia’s Law on the Deposit Insurance System, commercial banks contributed GEL 7.3 million to the deposit insurance fund as of August 2026. The fund’s accumulated assets have reached approximately GEL 360 million.
