The Georgian government will introduce a voluntary cash compensation program for internally displaced persons (IDPs), offering GEL 10,000 per family member instead of housing. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that eligible families who have not previously received housing or compensation can apply through the relevant government agency.
The government will allocate GEL 58 million for the program this year, with funding expected to increase in the coming years. The initiative aims to speed up the resettlement process, which Kobakhidze said could otherwise take at least another decade.
Since 2012, more than 45,000 displaced families have received housing, while nearly 2,000 families have purchased rural homes with state support this year. An additional 2,600 families are expected to receive apartments once ongoing construction projects are completed.
Housing construction and the Rural House Program will continue for families that choose not to receive cash compensation.
