Nukri Nodia, founder of the Movement for Abkhazia, has criticized the government’s offer of GEL 10,000 per internally displaced person (IDP), saying the amount fails to address their housing needs. Speaking on BMGTV’s program Analytics, he argued that displaced people need the opportunity to return home, not a one-time payment for homes they lost.
Nodia said GEL 10,000 covers the cost of only around three square meters of property and is insufficient to buy an apartment or even cover a rental deposit. He added that using the money for rent would provide only temporary relief, leaving families’ housing problems unresolved.
The government has allocated GEL 58 million for the program, which is expected to benefit approximately 5,800 people. Applications opened on October 19 and will be accepted through November 2 at Public Service Halls nationwide.
Eligible IDP families that have not previously received state housing or equivalent compensation can apply. According to the Ministry of Health, the GEL 10,000 payment per eligible family member will be distributed in application order.
