Georgia has reached a positive conclusion in negotiations to purchase Vamorolone, another medicine for treating Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said at the October 7 government meeting.

He said only technical procedures remain before the contracts are exchanged and the state begins purchasing the medicine. Under the government program, Vamorolone will be provided completely free of charge to Duchenne patients, alongside Givinostat.

Kobakhidze said Givinostat has already arrived in Georgia and will be distributed to patients in the coming days. The government’s decision follows nearly two months of continuous protests by parents of Duchenne patients demanding access to treatment.

Following the protests, parents met with Kobakhidze and Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze, receiving an official commitment that the state would provide treatment. On July 31, Georgia signed an agreement with Italy’s Italfarmaco to purchase Givinostat, which was approved by the U.S. FDA in 2024 and became available in Europe in June 2025.
