Georgian banks will contribute up to GEL 10 million per month to the Deposit Insurance Fund from January 2027, following a planned increase in the deposit insurance limit to GEL 100,000. The change is expected to raise banks’ mandatory contributions by 35–40%.
Levan Todua, head of the Deposit Insurance Agency, told Business Course that the increase should not place a significant burden on the banking sector, given its high profitability. In August 2026, banks contributed more than GEL 7.2 million to the fund.
Todua said the amount of insured deposits currently stands at GEL 16 billion and is expected to increase by approximately GEL 5 billion after the new limit takes effect. The share of insured deposits is projected to rise from its current level to around 21–22% of total deposits, while coverage among individual depositors could exceed 40%.
Although the expanded coverage will increase costs for banks, Todua said it will also strengthen public confidence and financial stability. The Deposit Insurance Fund’s portfolio currently exceeds GEL 450 million.
