Georgian Railway has cancelled a GEL 29 million tender for the purchase of 200 freight wagons. The tender was published on the state procurement platform on July 8, 2026, but was terminated only a few hours later after the procurement committee decided that the technical specifications of the wagons needed further review and clarification.
According to the committee’s decision, additional discussions were required to ensure that the procurement conditions fully reflected the company’s needs and would make the process more effective. The railway company said the tender was cancelled in accordance with the special procurement rules approved by the Georgian government.
This is not the first unsuccessful attempt by Georgian Railway to purchase new freight wagons. Previous tenders have also failed due to supplier disqualifications or lack of interest. In February 2026, a tender for 120 wagons worth GEL 17.4 million was cancelled after all four participating companies were disqualified for failing to meet the requirements.
The company also attempted to purchase rolling stock in 2023. A GEL 55 million tender for 300 freight wagons received no bids, while another tender held in October of the same year ended after the only participating company was disqualified. Georgian Railway has not yet completed a contract for the planned wagon purchases.
