Georgia's State Electrosystem (GSE) says the nationwide power outage was caused by technical work being carried out at the Enguri Hydropower Plant following the system failures recorded on July 24–25.
According to GSE, engineers needed to operate the electricity system in isolated mode and at frequencies different from the nominal level to examine equipment at the plant. The process resulted in temporary power outages across the country.
The company said emergency measures were immediately implemented to restore electricity, with power already partially restored. Full electricity supply across Georgia is expected to resume shortly.
The August 5 outage is the third nationwide blackout since the incidents on July 24–25. Following those earlier disruptions, the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC) launched an administrative investigation, while the State Security Service opened a sabotage probe.
