Georgia’s almond and walnut sectors are reporting higher yields this year. According to the industry association, commercial orchards produced approximately 3,000 tonnes of almonds and 3,500 tonnes of walnuts last year. This year, output is expected to reach 4,000 tonnes of in-shell almonds and 5,000 tonnes of walnuts.
Niko Nikoladze, a member of the supervisory board of the Almond and Walnut Association, expects almond production to increase by around 70% next year as more orchards reach full-bearing maturity.
“Compared with last year, we have grown significantly in both crops. According to this year’s forecasts, we expect 4,000 tonnes of in-shell almonds and 5,000 tonnes of walnuts, which represents significant growth,” Nikoladze said.
He attributed the expected surge in almond production to properly established orchards entering their productive phase, alongside improvements in farmers’ expertise. These factors are expected to make a substantial contribution to overall yields.
Walnut production is also increasing. Nikoladze said that, despite a challenging year due to weather conditions, both yields and product quality have improved, with better quality directly linked to farmers’ growing professionalism.
