Georgia’s banking sector expects lending to grow by double digits this year, Aleksandre Dzneladze, President of the Banking Association of Georgia, told BMG, citing strong credit portfolio growth and expectations of increased activity toward year-end.
Dzneladze said it remains too early to determine how tighter borrower affordability rules, known as payment-to-income (PTI) requirements, will affect lending from 2027. The changes could limit borrowing for certain individuals, although their broader impact on overall lending activity is still uncertain.
In September 2026, Georgia’s banking sector loan portfolio reached GEL 78.1 billion, representing annual growth of nearly 17%.
Under the new rules, the 25% PTI limit will apply to borrowers earning up to GEL 2,000 per month from February 1, 2027. From September 1, 2027, the income threshold will rise to GEL 2,500.
