The Ministry of Finance has published a report on Georgia’s External Debt for April, 2024. According to the document, the total debt amounted to USD 8.67 billion, which was USD 45 million less than in March.
However, compared to the previous year, the state debt has increased by USD 124 million due to new debts. According to the report, over the last year, the state's debt towards the Asian Development Bank (ADB) increased by USD 109 million, which was currently the largest donor financial institution of the Georgian government.
The government of Georgia borrows foreign debt mainly for financing large infrastructure projects, among which the most expensive projects are the East-West Highway, as well as the new North-South connecting highway. International donors also allocate funds for the country's regional development projects and budget-supporting credits.
